PNHS Tech Support Web services

The College of PNHS provide a number of "stock" online services. These include the webmail system, the mailing list manager, the calendar server, and the courseware server, as well as the support of official web pages.

Webmail system:

• Available to anyone whose E-mail is @pnhs.purdue.edu, or @pharmacy.purdue.edu. Note that @nursing.purdue.edu addresses are being phased out, and, as of March 1, 2008, no new accounts are being created in any of our domains.
• Online at https://webmail.pnhs.purdue.edu/.
• Provides access to E-mail, allows control over spam filtering, and allows you to change your password for online services.

Mailing list manager

• Available to users within the College of Pharmacy, Nursing, and Health Sciences.
• Online at https://mail.pnhs.purdue.edu:4430/cgi-bin/majordomo/.
• Provides mailing-list capabilities for departments, groups, and special projects.

Calendar server:

• Available to users within the College of Pharmacy, Nursing, and Health Sciences.
• Online at https://calendar.pnhs.purdue.edu/.
• Provides scheduling for people, rooms, resources, and events within the College of Pharmacy, Nursing, and Health Sciences.
• Can automatically E-mail you reminders of important events on your calendar.
• Can be synchronized with other calendaring systems, including Microsoft Outlook and most palmtop devices.
• Uses the same usernames and passwords as the E-mail system for simplicity. Passwords for all users can be changed thru the webmail system (see above).

Courseware server:

• Available to instructors teaching courses, and students taking courses, within the College of Pharmacy, Nursing, and Health Sciences.
• Online at https://courses.pnhs.purdue.edu/.
• Provides a mechanism for posting course materials, and for communicating among instructors and students.
• Features:
  • Gradations of access for Instructors, Assisting Instructors, Supporting Staff, Teaching Assistants, Students, and Guests.
  • System to upload and distribute documents to students. Documents can include:
    • "Normal" documents such as handouts and lecture notes
    • Multimedia elements such as movies and animations
    • Essentially anything you can put in a computer file
  • Online gradebook that meets all current privacy requirements
  • Password protection for course materials, and automatic encryption of transmission of information, to protect student privacy and instructional materials.
  • Online exams and quizzes
  • Online course evaluations and surveys, eliminating the need to pass out "bubble sheets".
  • Discussion group system to interact with students online.
  • Specialized tools for study questions, Frequently Asked Questions, and links to other sources of information.
  • E-mail tool for communicating with students without having to collect all their E-mail addresses.
• The system was designed for ease of use, and (unlike WebCT), requires no specialized training for instructors or students.
• The courseware engine is an in-house design, and customized improvements can be made. The online exams and online survey tools were made expressly for the College of PNHS.

Official web pages:

Currently, PNHS tech support manages and maintains the web pages for the College of PNHS, the School of Pharmacy, the School of Nursing, the School of Health Sciences, the departments of Industrial and Physical Pharmacy, Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology, and Pharmacy Practice, the Division of Nuclear Pharmacy, and the Natural Inhibitors of Carcinogenesis Program Project. Any official group or organization in the College of PNHS can arrange for a web presence to be professionally maintained through PNHS technical support. Personal web pages:

Personal web page servers exist for the School of Pharmacy (http://people.pharmacy.purdue.edu/), the School of Nursing (http://people.nursing.purdue.edu/) and the School of Health Sciences (http://people.healthsciences.purdue.edu/). Instructions for setting up your personal web pages are available on the individual webservers. Note that while PNHS Technical Services maintains the servers, the development of your personal web pages is entirely up to you.

Custom applications:

We can provide much more than basic web pages. We also have in-house capabilities for custom databases and database-driven applications. • The online searchable faculty and staff directory
• The online trouble-reporting system
• The Division of Nuclear Pharmacy's online maps of nuclear pharmacies
• The Office of Student Services' online appointment-scheduling system
• Customized courseware modules.
